Creating & Downloading iPod Flash Cards

If you can create a PowerPoint presentation, then you can create flash cards for students to download to their iPods or smartphones!  Here is a quick overview...
Here is what you do...

1.  Create a PowerPoint making sure not to be too wordy when creating individual slides.
2.  Use visual aids to convey the meaning of the vocabulary word, definition, term, formula, or what ever you want students to learn.  There are some really great creative commons photo sharing/photo editing sites out there, but these two are my favorites:  Stock Exchange and Picnik.

3.  Once your PowerPoint is completed, save it as a JPEG file.  Depending on your computer, you may need to scroll down from the drop down menu to find this option.
4.  You may be prompted to choose "every slide" or "current slide only"- select "every slide."  This will allow slides to become separate images to be saved in a folder.

5.  Rename the first nine slides to give each slide the same numeric value.  If you have under 100 slides, then the numeric value will only go to the tenth (00).  If you have over 100 slides then the numeric value will go to the hundredth (000) placement value.
Example:  change "slide1" to "slide01"
Do this for the first nine slides to make sure that all slides remain in order.

6.  Create a .zip file of your new flash card images. The next few steps will vary depending on your computer.

7.  If you are a MAC user- press [ctrl] and right click the folder that contains your new flash cards.  then select [compress > "name of your file"].

8.  If you are a PC user- right click on the folder that contains your new flash cards.  Then select [send > compressed (zipped) folder].

9.  Now you have a .zip file that contains your images (flash cards).  You are almost there!

1.  Connect your iPod to your computer using the USB cord that came with your iPod.
2.  Open iTunes.
3.  Under "Devices" (left menu pane) click your iPod icon.
4.  A menu tab will appear.  From the menu tab, click "Photos"
5.  From the pop up menu, check "Synchronize Photos From" and select either iPhoto, Choose Photo, or Pictures (depending on where you saved the .zip file).
6. Wait for photos (flash cards) to sync to your iPod.

I created The Dixonary Vocabulary Website for my students as a place to study SAT vocabulary words.  At my school, the tenth grade English teachers have adopted the QUACK! vocabulary program (which I can't recommend highly enough...5 stars).  For more information regarding QUACK! click here.  To incorporate technology standards and integrate technology in the classroom, my students are currently creating vocabulary flash cards while reading the required tenth grade curriculum novels.  Students follow the steps above and create the flash cards which we then post to the website.  Currently we have vocabulary flash cards for 1984 and Lord of the Flies. Bookmark the site for future novels.
